Job Title: Assistant/Associate Professor - Master Teacher of Classical
Acting
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
Contract Period: 9 months
Job Information:
POSITION: This position resides within a large undergraduate and
graduate acting program with 7 acting faculty and approximately 125 acting
undergraduates.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach and provide leadership in developing a revised
M.F.A. Acting program with a classical emphasis. Teaching in the School's
large undergraduate acting sequence is probable and directing opportunies
are possible. Other duties include serving on school, college, and
university committees. Candidate must be committed to collegiality and
collaboration with colleagues in developing School goals and objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS: M.F.A. in a Theatre discipline or equivalent
professional experience with specific expertise in Shakespeare. Preferred
qualifications are substantial professional experience, a commitment to an
ongoing professional career and additional expertise in Restoration, Moliere
and alternative approaches to the classics. Two years of university-level
teaching experience also preferred.
RANK AND SALARY: Tenure-track, 9 month appointment at the Assistant or
Associate Professor rank. Salary is competitive and commensurate with
experience and qualifications.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 16, 2007.
REVISED MFA: ACTING: The School of Theatre is committed to a revised
M.F.A. in Theatre: Acting with a classical emphasis and the goal of creating
a new generation of artists prepared to interpret classical, linear, and
non-linear language based texts. Actors from this program will have a
facility with language, a deep and strong connection to their physical life,
a strong, supple, and flexible vocal instrument, and penetrating insight
into the action of Dramatic texts. The current M.F.A in Theatre: Acting is
on hiatus and is expected to invite students for the fall 2008 semester.
THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE: The School of Theatre is a large
production-oriented program that offers the BA/BS, MA/MS, and MFA degrees.
The School also includes an undergraduate program in dance. A member of the
University/Resident Theatre Association and accredited by the National
Association of Schools of Theatre, the School has 30 faculty with over 350
undergraduate majors and 30 graduate students. Performance facilities are
excellent with a state of-the-art proscenium theatre in the new Center for
the Performing Arts, a small thrust theatre, and a flexible black-box studio
theatre. The School of Theatre also is the home of the
nationally-recognized Illinois Shakespeare Festival, an U/RTA Equity
contract theatre. Illinois State University, founded in 1857, is located in
the central region of the state within the Twin Cities of
Bloomington-Normal, approximately two and a half hours from both Chicago and
St. Louis.
