Job Title:  Assistant Professor - Dance Teacher

Contract Period:  9 months

Job Information:

POSITION:          Illinois State University's School of Theatre seeks
applicants for an Assistant Professor in Dance; tenure-track position,
9-month appointment.


RESPONSIBILITIES:        Job duties include teaching dance technique,
elementary through advanced in two of the following areas:  1) Classical
Ballet;  2) Jazz Dance;  3) Modern Dance.  Teach two or more of the
following: 1) Dance History;  2) Fundamentals of Movement & Somatics of
Dance;  3) Rhythmic Fundamentals & Literature for Dance;  4) Multicultural
Perspectives in Dance;  5) Dance Improvisation/Dance Composition;  6) Dance
Pedagogy.   Responsibilities also include concert production assistance,
advising undergraduate student creative work, choreographic support of
theatre productions, and choreography for Faculty/Guest Artist Concerts.
Serve on departmental and university committees and collaborate with
colleagues in developing and achieving departmental goals and objectives.


QUALIFICATIONS:       MFA in Dance.  A minimum of two years university-level
teaching experience and professional performing credits.


SALARY:     Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE:       The School of Theatre offers two sequences in
Dance with three full-time and one part-time dance faculty.  Faculty are
nationally-recognized practicing artists and/or scholars pursuing creative
activities that further enhance their instruction in the dance program and
provide strong connections within the field, both professionally and
academically.  The primary goal of the Dance Program at I.S.U. is to prepare
individuals for careers as performers, choreographers, teachers, and/or to
pursue post-graduate study in the field of dance and related professions
through professional training in the areas of dance performance, dance
production, and dance education, emphasizing the varied styles, and
techniques that prepare students for the diverse and rigorous nature of a
profession within the field.  One of two performance areas of study within
the School of Theatre, the program offers a newly revised sequence in Dance
Performance and a new sequence in Dance Education leading to Teacher
Certification, grades 6-12.  Both sequences feature a comprehensive dance
and theatre curricula for students desiring professional careers in dance,
pursuit of future graduate study, or the scope and artistic depth of
knowledge and experience to pursue teaching careers in public schools.  In
addition, the program offers a Minor in Secondary Dance Education.  The
School of Theatre views the training of dance teachers as part of the
College of Fine Arts' priority in promoting unique community-based
programs.   The dance program enjoys the visibility and strong professional
support of the College of Fine Arts.  The dance faculty and students have
been active in the American College Dance Festival Association, hosting the
Great Lakes Region in 1999 and receiving choreographic recognition within
recent years.  Performance facilities are excellent with a theatre and
concert hall in the new Center for the Performing Arts, a small thrust
theatre, and a flexible black-box studio theatre.  The Illinois State Dance
Theatre company is open by audition to all students, and produces two
fully-supported mainstage concerts each year as well as numerous informal
concerts, touring, lecture/demonstration performance opportunities, and a
student choreographed concert.  Teaching facilities include one large,
fully-equipped dance studio; one smaller dance studio; sound and video
equipment; rehearsal spaces; and full costume and scene shops.  Nationally
and internationally acclaimed dance guest artists-in-residence are brought
to campus each year to contribute to the professional growth of students.
Illinois State University, founded in 1857, is located in the central region
of the state within the Twin Cities of Bloomington-Normal, approximately two
and a half hours from both Chicago and St. Louis.
